Kizomba
The tango of Africa.
Kizomba is a sensual, soulful partner dance from Angola. In Kimbundu the name means something like “party” or “gathering”. Born in the 1980s out of semba and shaped by zouk and kompa, it is danced in a close embrace — and asks for a fine sense of your partner like hardly any other dance.

Kizomba at a glance
- Music
- Angolan rhythms with Caribbean influence, steady and slow.
- Lead
- Through the chest and core — less through arms and hands.
- Hold
- A close embrace, intimate and connecting.
- Slow, flowing movement rather than quick figures.
- Musicality in small movements and subtle weight shifts.
- Traditional kizomba, urban kiz and tarraxinha as variants.
